ECS and Modern Technology: Preserving the Past

Oatlands

Engineering Consulting Services (ECS) is providing in-kind contributions of three dimensional (3D) scanning and imaging services at the Oatlands Historic House & Gardens, a National Trust Historic Site, in Leesburg, Virginia. As part of the “Year of Preservation and Restoration,” Oatlands is investing over $400,000 for preservation and renovation work on historic structures located on the plantation over the next year.

Established in 1798 on 3,408 acres by George Carter, Oatlands began as a wheat plantation. Today the property comprises 415 acres of farmland and gardens. With structures including the mansion, Carriage House, Bachelor’s Cottage, greenhouse and barns dating as far back as 1810, the use of LiDAR technology for scanning will assist with providing base drawings and 3D models to plan for the restoration projects. ECS will also utilize scan data to aid in engineering assessments of site features such as retaining walls.

“ECS’ contribution is vitally important to gaining precise information on the construction processes and raw materials in the many historic structures on the 400 acres that comprise Oatlands Historic House and Gardens. It will greatly help our restoration efforts and ensure future generations can learn from our unique history,” said Caleb M. Schutz, CEO, Oatlands.
