What began as an engineering project to improve roads and drainage in a remote Malawian village became an unexpected opportunity to strengthen connections across communities and continents. Bryan Layman, an ECS employee and member of Engineers Without Borders, traveled to Kaseye, Malawi, to lead infrastructure improvements supporting local transportation and drainage needs. During his work, Layman discovered that the village was home to a Catholic mission within the Diocese of Karonga, creating an unexpected connection to the Diocese of Arlington in Virginia. His experience highlights how engineering, community engagement and shared purpose can extend beyond infrastructure to bring people and communities together.
