Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Memorial Stadium
Five levels and 733,239 square feet of legacy hazards, one coordinated solution.
Slated to be the next home for the Washington Commanders as early as 2030, RFK Stadium presents unique redevelopment opportunities. But first? A bit of housekeeping. ECS Group of Companies Mid-Atlantic office performed hazardous materials assessments, developed abatement protocols, and provided project oversight across 733,239 square feet of the historic RFK Stadium site. The work required careful management of decades-old legacy contaminants and close coordination with multiple regulatory agencies, while staying aligned with a high-profile demolition and redevelopment timeline.
Challenge: Navigating legacy materials and public agency demands
A 2006 RFK Stadium site redevelopment study revealed costly site soil with traces of various contaminants, including lead, chromium and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as well as materials such as ash, cinders, glass and metal debris. Agency requirements and the public nature of the project also introduced additional regulatory and procedural demands throughout assessment and abatement.
Solution: Multi-phase surveys and coordinated abatement oversight
ECS performed comprehensive hazardous materials surveys, developed abatement protocols and provided project oversight for remediation activities across the stadium. This approach facilitated alignment with regulatory timelines and demolition schedules.
