Northwest Stadium (Formerly “FedEx Field”)
From FedExField, to the Commanders Stadium, to Northwest Stadium
When the Washington Commanders leave Northwest Stadium for their new home at the newly renovated Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium site, it’ll mark the end of a long chapter, and ECS Group of Companies has been there to support its growth across every quarter including 100+ facility upgrades, and a few Third-Party Inspection program (TPIP) services.
Challenge: Tight deadlines and complex site conditions
The original stadium didn’t make construction easy. Unknown subsurface conditions threatened bearing capacity before a single pile was driven; extreme structural loads across an 85,000-seat venue demanded verification of 1,700 high-capacity steel H-piles; and high-volume ring-road traffic required county-compliant pavement engineering. High groundwater conditions rounded out the picture.
Aging infrastructure under constant crowd load, corrosion and fatigue, and rotating event setups on tight turnarounds, brought a different kind of pressure. Ongoing compliance under Prince George’s County’s Third-Party Inspection Program (TPIP) also posed a challenge.
Solution: Subsurface assessment and real-time event compliance
ECS managed construction materials testing across all major phases — foundation systems, structural steel, precast concrete seating, masonry and over one million cubic yards of earthwork. Real-time field data kept foundation adjustments on pace with an accelerated construction schedule.
ECS has also delivered TPIP-compliant structural and electrical evaluations, produced life safety drawings and provided code-compliant event oversight for major Live Nation events—including performance for Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour.
