Renovations at Truist Stadium (BB&T Ballpark)
Enhancing renovations for a 5,300-square-foot office and restroom facility at Truist Stadium
When the City of Winston-Salem moved to expand Truist Stadium, a core attraction in approximately 200,000 square feet of carefully planned entertainment, housing and retail, and home of the Winston-Salem Dash, they needed to first understand what the ground beneath the venue could actually hold. ECS’ Southeast office was determined to go to bat and support construction of a single-story office and restroom facility within the active stadium complex.
Challenge: Loose fill soils at bearing depth
Field exploration revealed very loose existing fill soils at depths below approximately 3 feet. These conditions threatened foundation stability and required specialized design recommendations to achieve adequate bearing capacity for the proposed 17-acre tract of land, with approximately 37 structures on the site.
Solution: Targeted undercutting and lean concrete stabilization
A core part of ECS’ work on the project was ECS’ Special Inspections and materials testing. ECS also conducted field exploration via standard penetration test (SPT) borings, laboratory testing and utility clearance to characterize subsurface conditions. The team recommended undercutting soft soils at bearing elevations and backfilling with lean concrete before constructing footings, paired with soil-supported slab design isolated from foundations to reduce differential movement.
