Service Beyond the Uniform: How ECS Is Strengthening Its Commitment to Veteran Hiring

ECS Group of Companies (ECS) is proud to be recognized as a Military Friendly® Employer, earning a Bronze designation in its first year of participation. This honor reflects ECS’ growing commitment to supporting veterans as they transition from military service to civilian careers — and to building a workforce that values leadership, integrity and teamwork.

The Military Friendly designation is awarded by VIQTORY, a service-disabled veteran-owned organization that evaluates companies based on hiring, retention and advancement of veterans. ECS earned a place among a select group of employers with less than $500 million in revenue who are actively investing in veteran talent. The designation also provides visibility in GI Jobs magazine, which is distributed across military bases nationwide.

For ECS, this recognition is just the beginning.

What is ECS’ approach to military recruiting?

Since officially launching its military recruiting program in January 2025, ECS has expanded its outreach efforts across the country. ECS partners with the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the Department of Defense SkillBridge Program to connect with transitioning service members and offer hands-on training in construction materials testing. These programs provide veterans with certifications in concrete, soil and nuclear density testing — skills that translate smoothly into ECS’ field technician roles.

ECS also attends Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) events, including the Career Transition Workshop, where recruiters meet active-duty personnel and introduce them to the wide range of career paths available at ECS. One recent success story: Brianna Jackson, a veteran now leading national accounts in Pensacola, Florida, joined ECS after attending a SAME event earlier this year.

In addition to recruiting, ECS is working to build long-term relationships with military transition offices across the country by distributing flyers and brochures that highlight ECS’ career opportunities and veteran-friendly culture.

Veterans bring more than technical skills — they bring leadership, discipline and a mission-first mindset. These qualities align closely with ECS’ core values: collaborate, focus and lead. Many veterans have experience managing teams, adapting to high-pressure environments and solving complex problems — which translate well to ECS’ work in engineering, testing and consulting.

ECS is also working to make sure veterans are not overlooked due to unfamiliar job titles or military jargon. The company is developing tools to help hiring managers better understand military resumes and recognize transferable skills. “A combat engineer might be doing exactly what we do,” says Andrew Pittman, who leads ECS’ military recruiting efforts, “but their resume won’t say ‘construction materials testing.’ We’re changing how we read those resumes.”


How is ECS measuring progress and goals?

In 2024, ECS achieved a 4.6% veteran hiring rate. In 2025, that number rose to nearly 5%. The company’s goal for 2026 is to reach 5.7% — a benchmark that supports compliance with federal contracting guidelines and reflects ECS’ values.

So far this year, ECS has hired 72 veterans, compared to 1,454 non-veterans. While the volume of veteran applicants continues to grow, ECS is focused on improving how those candidates are evaluated and matched with roles that fit their experience.

The company is also expanding its SkillBridge offerings to include geotechnical, drilling and welding inspector tracks — opening new doors for veterans with diverse backgrounds and interests.
