If the United States had to apply for college admission based on this grade, it would have a slim chance of being admitted: With an overall GPA of D+ in the 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Report Card for America’s Infrastructure, the U.S. needs major infrastructure improvements that will require an estimated investment of $3.6 Trillion by 2020.
The ASCE Report Card assesses the condition and performance of four major infrastructure categories: water and environment, transportation, public facilities, and energy. These categories encompass elements we use every day – such as roadways, bridges, public parks and recreation facilities, energy, public schools, utilities and wastewater systems – all of which we typically expect to work properly, but don’t give much thought to unless they’re broken.
