The Northeast Florida Construction Career Days is a three day event that brings in over 1,000 high school students to learn about career opportunities in the engineering and construction industry. Mike Gruber was a committee member and helped chaperone students throughout the event. ECS provided two Learning Labs with 20 minute presentations throughout the day. Joe Champion ran the first lab where we discussed concrete and mobilized a compressive strength machine to break cylinders. The second lab, presented a general discussion on concrete and concrete mix designs. Then we asked the students to batch up their own “concrete cookies”. Adam Knisely designed the cookie recipe and prepared all the ingredients while Chris Egan and Justin Scarberry ran the lab. Cheryl Gessling helped coordinate and prepare materials for months leading up to the event, as well as staffed the event at the concrete cookie lab each day.
