ECS Charleston employee David Lyon was selected as our 2nd place 2019 GRIT Award winner. The GRIT Award recognizes an employee who goes above and beyond in demonstrating guts, resilience, initiative and tenacity. We caught up with David to learn a little more about what has inspired him.
Being tough is a necessary part of having GRIT. Who in your life helped you develop this quality?
My dad and grandfather, they both always worked long hours and didn’t stop until the job was finished.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Making the choice to go to college 13 years after I graduated high school and receiving a Civil Engineering degree in 3.5 years.
What was your first job?
I was 14 years old and worked for a local trucking company on the weekends pressure washing the trucks. They taught me to drive an 18 wheeler before I even knew how to drive a car.
What advice would you give to someone entering the industry?
Find someone you admire and who is willing to invest their time in you and LISTEN to them. Books will teach you everything you want to know, but experience will teach you everything you need to know.
