Summer Safety Tips

Reading Time: 1 minute
As part of National Safety Month, here are some safety tips for you and your family to keep in mind during this season.

Sun Protection & Heat-Related
Avoid being in the sun between 10am and 3pm and stay in the shade as much as possible.

Wear sunscreen, even when it is overcast.

Staying hydrated is your best defense against heat-related injuries. Drink water at least every 20 minutes.

Take frequent breaks when working out in the sun and in humid conditions, even when it is overcast.

Water
Don’t go into the water unless you know how to swim.

Never swim alone.

Make sure the body of water matches your skill level; swimming in a pool is much different than swimming in a lake or river, where more strength is needed to handle currents.

Never leave your child alone near the water; if you have to leave, take your child with you.

Playground
Nearly 80 percent of playground injuries are caused by falls. Beware of improper protective surfaces and trip hazards. Learn more of what to look for here.

Pedestrian
Look left, right and left again before crossing the street.

Make eye contact with drivers of oncoming vehicles.

Only cross at designated crosswalks.

Head up, phone down.
