Project Description:

The Coton Bridge consists of a four lane ConSpan that spans across Goose Creek in Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia. The cross section of the bridge span includes a total of nine Conspan arches along the 450-foot bridge length. Bridge foundations are a combination of drilled shafts and spread footings.

ECS Involvement:

·         ECS provided geotechnical engineering services including borings performed on Goose Creek with a drill rig secured on a barge.  These borings were conducted in general accordance with applicable Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) guidelines for conducting soil boring explorations for structures and roadways.

·         ECS performed laboratory testing to determine pertinent engineering properties of the subsurface materials encountered and to determine the suitability of some of the materials for reuse in the backfilling of the structure.

·         ECS performed full-time testing and inspection during the construction of deep foundations, concrete abutments, soil backfill, and the installation of ConSpans.
