Project Description:

Project Description:

The Daily Herald newspaper production facility is a multi-level, industrial, slab-on-grade building with a footprint of 114,000 square feet and a total building area of 160,000 square feet. The structure is structural steel construction supported by a shallow spread and strip footing foundation system. A mat foundation supports the presses that are five stories in height. The building exterior is a combination of precast concrete and metal panels as well as some masonry fascia with insulated windows.

ECS Involvement:

·         ECS provided construction monitoring, materials testing and consulting services for all project elements. Tasks included earthwork foundation installation, cast in place concrete, masonry, as well as structural steel and fireproofing tests.

·         The project included construction of a large mat foundation for the state-of-the-art printing presses. ECS technicians and engineers evaluated mat and footing subgrades using in-situ testing, auguring and test pits to confirm that organic deposits were absent or had been properly removed and replaced. Compaction testing of the soil was a key element for construction of an aggregate pad for the press mat.
